Defining Movements: Moral Judgements and Religious Obligations

I would like to share a summary of a conversation I recently had with a friend, and fellow Hellenist. He is finding himself out of favor within certain circles of Hellenics, Religio Romana, and “progressive” Kemetics. These circles would prefer practicing an open-ended, complex mixture of beliefs, rather than a reconstruction of the culturally specific religions they claim to adhere.

Hellenismos.us: A Month in Review

It has been one month since Hellenismos.us went online, and what a month it has been. Hellenismos.us exists because we feel that there is an urgent need for networking, communication, and unity within our religious community. If this first month is any indication of our future success, then this website will have no problem accomplishing its mission. I want to thank all those who have taken time to visit, to join, to participate in our forum, and those who created blogs. We plan to share with you the incredible statistics from our first month, and share with you the positive direction we are going.

Awaiting Kharis II

I am sure we are all aware that Sarah Kate Istra Winter is planning to publish a second, revised, and expanded edition of her Kharis: Hellenic Polytheism Explored book in early 2008. While the original was only published a few short years ago, it was the only work on modern Hellenic Polytheism in print for a very long time, and probably warrants this second edition. It will be interesting to compare and contrast these two versions, and I encourage anyone who has yet to get it, to purchase the original while it is still available. It can be found through cafepress.com.

Reciprocity in Hellenismos

When we Hellenics think of reciprocity, we immediately think offerings, we immediately think about the Gods. We understand that the Gods uphold the laws of reciprocity, that though the Gods are boundless the law of reciprocity is sacred to them. The reason we offer to the Gods is not to bribe the Gods but to reciprocate with the Gods. As the Gods have given so much to us, so we should offer something back in turn. We know that the Gods inherently benefit not from our offerings or our prayers. We know that our offering of libation, hymns, deeds etc.. is not something that the Gods need or really desire. What we do know is that reciprocity is sacred to the Gods and that is why we offer in our worship and prayer.

Modern Hellenismos

Let me get one thing clear before I continue this blog.

I am a modern day Hellenic, which means I am a 21st century Hellenic. I live over 1500 years after the collapse and demise of the polytheistic Hellenic society. I live in a society that is very different and would in many respect be alien to even the Victorians or Qing Chinese or even the early 20th century American, let alone society from over two millenias ago. I live in a society that in many respect holds very different set of values and societal emphasis from any society that has come before it. I live in a society that is technologically, politically, socially and economically different from even society a century prior.
